Netflix launches app for select Android Phones
Android users now have something more to rejoice about when it comes to streaming media on their devices. The long anticipated Netflix movie streaming media player app for Android was finally launched last week.
As you most likely know, Netflix already offers movie streaming on almost all media platforms like Home Theatre PCs (HTPC) via Windows Media Center 7, PS3 consoles, web browsers just about everywhere, and even Windows Phone 7.
With resuming capabilities, the app is not much different than the Windows Phone 7 version. There IS a major buzz kill though: There’s only a few phones currently on which the app can be run, including:
- HTC Incredible with Android 2.2
- HTC Nexus One with Android 2.2, 2.3
- HTC Evo 4G with Android 2.2
- HTC G2 with Android 2.2
- Samsung Nexus S with Android 2.3.
And you thought we were joking when we said a ‘few’?
The problem, according to Roma De of Netflix, is with Android fragmentation phenomenon. On the Netflix blog, she wrote:
…..One of these challenges is the lack of standard streaming playback features that the Netflix application can use to gain broad penetration across all available Android phones. In the absence of standardization, we have to test each individual handset and launch only on those that can support playback. We are aggressively qualifying phones and look forward to expanding the list of phones on which the Netflix app will be supported.
That is the reason Netflix app for Android is one of the few apps that were released for Windows Phone 7 before Android. And thanks to that very same reason, the app won’t be compatible with the soon-to-be released Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
But if Roma De’s words are to be taken to heart, we will see an expansion in the number of Android phones that can support the new software app in the coming months. Seeing Netflix’s position in the current video streaming market, that might just well be true.
What are your thoughts? Anyone out there try it yet? All I can say is that I can’t wait for this to work on the Xoom, but for now I am quite happy waiting Netflix on either my HTPC Media Center or via Google TV online.
